Whatta weekend.
Friday night, took my godson to go see Monster House, GREAT MOVIE by the way. He liked it too. So much so, he wants to go see it again, in 3-D. Oy.
Saturday, spent most of the early evening riding my new mountain bike up and down the cul-de-sac. My girly bits are still throbbing. I haven't ridden a real bike since, um, high school. The entrance of the subdivision is weird. It goes down hill for a bit then sharply up hill. So we rode to the front, I'm all wobbly, he's all speedy. Then turn around and after two pedals, the bike took off.
Then we pedaled up hill and, he all of 8 years old, tells me how he LOVES this part and goes. Me, being a dim bulb, follows and holy jeebus, almost lost my lunch. I held on for dear life and the bike shimmied and shook and I prayed I didn't ride over a pebble else I end up flipping over the bike.
I didn't go up that monster hill for the rest of the night
He told me he was scared the first time he did it but I'll get used to it. Whatever kid. The bike I have needs to be returned. It pedals funny, doesn't really catch the gears, so there is no resistance. Shifting gears didn't help much. I got it as a tester bike, like if I really use it, I'll invest in a better one, but I'm going to go ahead and do that. And get it from a real bike shop.
My aunt gave it a whirl too, she was funny. Now if I haven't ridden since high school, you can imagine how long it's been for her, but the saying is absolutely correct, she did not forget. She felt the same thing I did and as I read the manual, couldn't help but think, when did riding become so technical?
I don't remember doing all that reading when I was a kid. You got a bike and you pedaled. You braked, hard. You shifted gears whenever. The book, which looked like a car manual, was all about downshifting and gearing up and braking to slow down. I got a headache.
But yea, that bike goes back.
Sunday we were going to fly kites, but there was no wind. We ended up doing crafts, painting rocks, which was really fun. For a few weeks now he's been collecting rocks and putting them in a pile in the back of the house. I got a straw mat and we sat cross legged in the buggy backyard and painted. It was water paints so the color was very light. I told him next weekend I'll get some real paint, acrylic and glaze, so we can do this better.
Then it started to rain so we went on the covered patio and continued but the rain was so hard, the mist was getting us wet. He liked running in the house b/c the cover didn't completely reach the wall and we got doused w/cold water. Kids ![]()
The millisecond the rain stopped, he was knocking @ my door.
"Can we finish painting the rocks?"
Nap and DVD viewing be damned, I said shure.
He had a surprise for me too, his fingerpaints. YaY! It went on much thicker.
We sit down and get to work. Here comes the rain again. Back inside we go. More giggles @ getting drenched w/water.
Third time was the charm.
We braved the drizzling till the sun came out and then left the rocks to dry. We are supposed to finish the undersides tonight.
I found two cool rock painting craft projects for us to do next weekend and it'll take me a few more weeks to get the real bike, so next weekend I'll rollerblade w/him.
What on earth have I gotten myself into?
