For a long time I've had trouble sleeping. Back @ my old apartment, it was mainly due to what I was sleeping on. Let's just say it wasn't a bed. So every turn, I'd wake up and before long I perfected the art of sleeping perfectly still, on one side, for the entire night. When I went to visit my mom and slept in a *gasp* real bed, I slept like a log, but also didn't move.
Knowing I was moving and would have a bed and stuff, I made a conscious decision to make my space as peaceful as possible. First on the agenda, no sleeping w/the TV on.
I got that habit and sleeping w/@ least one light on, due to a large water bug flying into my living room a few years back. From that point, I needed the TV on a little louder than mute, else I would "hear" things shuffling around and get freaked out.
Now I sleep in total quiet. Matter of fact nothing is in the alcove where my bed resides, but the bed. And my stereo and a few books. I'll post pics of this @ some point.
Then I have the TV away from the computer, b/c I also had a bad habit of being online w/the TV in my line of sight so I could do both @ the same time. What I'm striving for is focus and being present in whatever I'm doing. If I'm online, the TV is off, @ most the radio is on. If I'm watching TV, that's all I'm doing. Now I do eat in front of it, ideally I'd like to have a little bistro like table to sit in front the window so I can eat or I can go out on the deck some mornings, but that is more a weekend thing.
Plus @ nite, I'm a bit beat so I've been eating dinner as soon as I whip it up and ½-heartedly watch TV. My schedule has been so erratic, I broke my late evening viewing pattern and for the most part, I'm in bed by 10.
The last thing I've done, is gone off over the counter sleeping pills. I never liked taking them, always felt groggy the next day and didn't like how it knocked me out cold. By chance, last week, I caught a local radio station talking about insomnia and asked the listeners for natural cures. I took a few notes and went to the vitamin store last Friday.
I still have Sunday nite jitters, and totally forgot to take the pills (I have 2 kinds and a spray) but Tuesday, after being very very sleepy then got keyed up the second my head hit the pillow, I tried the spray. I believe it worked, it didn't knock me out right away, but I woke up not feeling hung over either. I figured the spray would work quicker, as it was approaching 11pm.
The listeners gave other tips I already do, like exercise, don't have anything in the room like TV, computer. Don't do anything but sleep in the bed, and if you still can't fall asleep get up and go back.
The last one was of particular interest to me b/c the girl who gave that tip said her doctor told her, when you stay in bed and toss and turn, you are training your body to not sleep at night. It totally made sense to me.
The last few weeks I've been training my body in such a way that by 10, I literally crawl into bed and unlike before, not only am I not laying in bed online, or watching TV or eating, I'm actually making my bed up each and every morning and use it for what it was intended, getting rest.
